Developing new imaging and therapy agents for early detection and treatment of a variety of diseases is one research thrust at the recently established McMaster Institute of Applied Radiation Sciences (McIARS).

One research group headed by Dr. John Valliant, Department of Chemistry and the Medical Physics and Applied Radiation Sciences Unit, is investigating new ways to deliver diagnostic and therapeutic radionuclides. Made at McIARS and in the department of nuclear medicine at Hamilton Health Sciences Corporation, these agents would be used in treating tumours and arthritis.

McIARS provides facilities for scientists with a wide range of expertise to work together on challenging scientific and medical problems. Dr. Valliant works with researchers in Nuclear Medicine and Medical Physics to develop and test new radiopharmaceuticals using cutting-edge diagnostic imaging tools such as positron emission tomography (PET).

“McIARS is a unique facility both nationally and internationally. It combines world-class facilities with an atmosphere of collaboration, which are both vital to our research efforts.”
