Does fancier technology always mean higher productivity for business? How reliably can you track insider trading? These are among the questions that fascinate Dr. Khalid Nainar, chair of Accounting in the DeGroote School of Business.

Funded under the first round of research grants for the Initiative on the New Economy provided by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, Dr. Nainar studies the impact of technology on productivity.

He’s particularly interested in the “productivity paradox,” under which devices intended to allow us to do more, and more quickly, prove to bring their own set of problems for organizations trying to monitor employees without being intrusive. Desktop computers allow users to do multitasking, for instance – but of what use is that if the employee is using the new capability to dial up sports scores instead?

“Everyone sees a lot of technological changes and the question is always asked, is it good or bad for society or individuals?”
