In human cancer, it is tumour spread to vital organs such as the lung and liver, and not the primary tumour itself, which proves fatal for the patient.” So says Dr. Juliet Daniel, Biology – and holder of a Premier’s Research Excellence Award -- of her efforts to understand how cancer cells escape from a primary tumour and travel to other parts of the body.

Although an answer continues to elude researchers, one promising avenue lies in investigating the epithelial cell-cell adhesion system, which is implicated in 50 per cent of cases of metastatic cancer. Understanding how this system malfunctions and allows tumours to progress is the focus of Dr. Daniel’s work.

Referring to a particular protein involved in cell adhesion and tumour metastasis, she says, “My most recent and exciting research discovery was the cloning and identification of a new transcription factor, Kaiso, named after the Caribbean calypso music.”
