Submitting an Application

Often researchers who are applying for grants from major funding agencies, like NSERC, CIHR, and SSHRC, are anxious that their grant application is complete and submitted on time.  Some granting agencies require evidence of ethics approval only after approval of the research grant, while others may request ethics approval with the grant application.  Research involving human subjects requires submission of an ethics application, even if it is not funded.

Presently there is no procedure for filling out an ethics form "online" and submitting it electronically.  Forms can be downloaded from the Ethics in Human Research webpage.  Forms should be typewritten and submitted according to the instructions on top of the page, to the < Research Ethics Officer >

Individual undergraduate students doing  research involving humans require the supervision of a faculty member.  Faculty instructors will direct student submissions to the Chair of the Student Research Ethics Committee (where one exists) for their department.  Students may use the generic student research ethics forms. Faculty members who assign course student research projects are required to submit a course application form.  These may be submitted to the Secretariat of the Student Research Ethics Committees (SRECs).  The application will be reviewed by the Research Ethics Officer for completeness. An acknowledgement will be emailed to the researchers stating the application has been received, and noting any outstanding requirements. The email will also state that the application has been sent for review, and when they may expect to receive a response from the REB or SREC.
