Volunteers needed to study new TB vaccine

McMaster researcher Zhou Xing, an investigator in the Michael G. DeGroote Institute for Infectious Disease Research, is looking for volunteers for a study testing a vaccine for tuberculosis.

The professor at the Centre for Gene Therapeutics and Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine has developed a host of novel anti-TB vaccines that boost protective immunity in previously BCG-vaccinated humans. One of his vaccines is based on a modified cold virus which contains a piece of harmless genetic material from the TB organism.

After its successful evaluation in various animal models, this genetic vaccine has been evaluated in healthy human volunteers at McMaster since 2010. This study is carried out by a team of McMaster researchers led by Dr. Fiona Smaill, Infectious Diseases physician and Chair of Pathology and Molecular Medicine. The vaccine has proven safe and effective in a total of 20 healthy volunteers that have received it to date. More testing is required to know whether this vaccine may be selected to use in TB endemic countries.

Healthy individuals are needed to participate in this study. Compensation is provided. To volunteer, please call 905-521-2100 ext. 73559 or email TBStudy@gmail.com.

World Tuberculosis Day, which falls each year on March 24, raises awareness of global tuberculosis epidemics and the need for better treatment. Despite the use of the anti-TB vaccine BCG for many decades and the availability of anti-TB antibiotics, about nine million people develop active TB and more than 1.5 million die of this disease every year.
