Graduate shares his success by making gifts to foster financial education

Hamilton, Ont. May 02, 2011McMaster University’s DeGroote School of Business announced today a new gift from Horizons Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) and its CEO Adam Felesky, which will directly benefit MBA students by better preparing them for a career in financial services.

Felesky, a McMaster graduate from 1999, and Horizons ETFs together have contributed $750,000 to create the Felesky MBA Scholarship, the Horizons Exchange Traded Funds Speaker Series and the Horizons Exchange Traded Funds Investment Decision Centre at DeGroote’s Ron Joyce Centre in Burlington.

“This gift will have a significant and long-lasting impact, facilitating connections with the investment industry for our students, faculty and alumni and allowing them to expand their knowledge and experience in this innovative sector,” says Patrick Deane, president of McMaster University. “We are grateful to Adam Felesky for helping to lead this wonderful gift to McMaster. He is someone who has had great personal and professional success and we are very proud of him.”

The gift was announced today at the inaugural event in the speaker series. A sold-out group of McMaster alumni and investment industry professionals gathered to celebrate the gift and heard from influential financial expert John Mauldin. Mauldin, an author whose books have made multiple appearances on New York Times best-seller lists, is a pioneering online commentator who provides investors with financial information and guidance.

The speaker series presents an opportunity to hear from leading experts who can share their knowledge and experience with McMaster students, alumni, and the financial community.

“At Horizons we have an enduring commitment to helping Canadians become better investors through education, innovation and access to leading investment strategies,” said Felesky, who graduated from McMaster in 1999 with a Bachelor of Engineering and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. “That is why we’re really excited to be partnering with the DeGroote School of Business. Their emphasis on academic excellence and innovation combined with hands-on experience are values we both share and believe will ultimately create a more educated and successful Canadian investment practitioner.”

The Felesky MBA Scholarship is the largest scholarship offered by the School of Business and provides $30,000 per year in funding to allow MBA students to pursue their educational goals.

The Horizons ETFs Investment Decision Centre, based at DeGroote’s new Ron Joyce Centre in Burlington, provides students hands-on exposure to state-of-the art portfolio management decision-making tools with technology that mirrors a professional portfolio manager's environment. The Investment Decision Centre gives students the training, knowledge and skills to be market ready for careers in financial services.

The Ron Joyce Centre, opened in September 2010, is the new home of DeGroote’s MBA and Executive Education programs. Entrepreneur and philanthropist Ron Joyce made an early commitment to the project, donating $10 million in 2007.
