Expert available to discuss bungled Google earnings release

Hamilton, Ont. October 18, 2012DeGroote School of Business professor Ronald Balvers is available to comment on Google’s botched earnings release and the subsequent halt in stock trading.

Balvers, a professor of finance and business economics, says investors may have panicked needlessly after seeing Google’s results.

“It appears the reason for the disappointing earnings is mostly due to factors outside of Google’s control, such as the appreciation of the dollar over the last year,” he says.  “There are no indications that Google’s fundamentals are deteriorating.  It is not losing ad revenue or facing new competitive challenges.  The 9 per cent drop in its stock valuation is a short-run market overreaction, probably exacerbated by the fact that the earnings report was mistakenly released early.”

Balvers’ area of expertise is asset pricing and financial markets and investments.
