Visual Identity Guidelines
The McMaster Logo
The McMaster University logo may only be used in official University materials, documents or communications produced by or for the University. The identity cannot be modified or altered in any way and must be presented in approved colours and font only as outlined in these guidelines. It may not be used for commercial use or by any unauthorized individual or organization.
Logo size and dimensions
- To ensure quality and readability, the minimum size of the McMaster logo should not be less than 3.75 cm (1.5 inches) wide.
- The logo must always be used to scale and in equal proportions – it cannot be graphically stretched out of proportion in any way.
- The elements of the logo (the words and the shield) must be used in their entirety and cannot be separated.
Versions of the logo
- The McMaster University logo may be used in a one-colour version in marketing and advertising materials using maroon, grey or black; or a three-colour version on any print or electronic materials that incorporates maroon, grey and gold.
- When reversing the logo out of a solid colour, McMaster University should appear in white. The shield may appear in solid white or full colour.

The University’s tag line
The University’s tag line — Inspiring Innovation and Discovery — can be used in conjunction with the logo in advertisements, marketing and promotional materials and web pages. It should not be used on letterhead, letterhead envelopes, business cards or in conjunction with the logo variations approved for the Faculties.
Do not:
- alter the size, relationship or position of the type or the shield in the logo
- alter the colour of any part of the identity beyond the approved variations provided in this guideline
- overprint type or photos, or place elements over the logo
- add borders or other graphic elements to the logo
- separate the elements of the logo (wording and shield) use on athletic uniforms – Athletics & Recreation has it own symbols for this purpose
Do not use the thumbnail samples below in any publication; they are very low resolution and meant for illustration on this page only. The eps files are high quality graphics suitable for use in print publications; they are vector files on transparent backgrounds and can be scaled from 1 inch to a million without losing their resolution. The jpg files are suitable for use in web and electronic applications; they cannot be enlarged.
