Fabulous Facilities

Bordering a major conservation area, the McMaster campus comprises 196 hectares (296 acres), and features 72 varieties of trees and shrubs.

The campus has 45 buildings with a total of 367,027 sq. m. of floor space.


Libraries – The McMaster University Library consists of Mills Memorial Library (Humanities and Social Sciences), Innis Library in Kenneth Taylor Hall (Business), the H.G. Thode Library of Science and Engineering, and the Health Sciences Library in the Health Sciences Centre. The University Library is a member of the Association of Research Libraries. The collection today contains more than 2 million volumes, 1,423,102 microform items, 174,956 non-print items and 11,041 linear feet of archival material. Current periodical titles number about 11,880.

Mills Memorial Library

Museum of Art – Officially opened to the public in June 1994, the Museum contains five exhibition galleries, a paper centre and an educational access gallery. The Museum offers a year-round program of exhibitions, ranging from historical displays to present-day artistic investigations either organized by the McMaster Museum or loaned by such institutions as the Art Gallery of Ontario and the National Gallery of Canada. The Museum also hosts its own lunchtime talks, visiting artist talks, seminars, tours, workshops and concerts.

Athletics & Recreation –McMaster Athletics and Recreation facilities, which include the Ivor Wynne Centre and David Braley-Athlete Centre, house nine gymnasiums, an Olympic-sized pool, 200m indoor track, squash courts, climbing wall, the David Braley Sport Medicine and Rehabilitation Centre and one of the largest university fitness centres in Canada.

In the spring of 2008, McMaster will open the new Ronald V. Joyce Stadium. The 6,000-seat multi-sport venue will be equipped with lights and an artificial soft surface.

The varsity program at McMaster fields more than 40 teams competing at the club, provincial and national levels. Highly skilled coaches help McMaster student-athletes achieve their potential while competing against other universities in Ontario and across Canada.

The outstanding efforts of McMaster's student-athletes and the social involvement of student supporters are focal points of student life on campus. Varsity events are a major source of school spirit for competitors and spectators alike. The Department of Athletics and Recreation urges all members of the community to take advantage of its facilities and programs.

The McMaster Marauders football team is among the best in the country.

Student Housing – The university owns and operates 12 on-campus residence buildings, accommodating a total of 3,683 students. Ten traditional-style residences consist of one all-female residence and 10 co-ed residences.  Within these, seven theme houses are offered for students to choose from. Traditional residences offer co-ed, single-sex, small, medium and large floor/building choices. Apartment style living is offered in two residences.  Bates Residence, offering four- and six-bedroom apartments, and Mary E. Keyes Residence, offering four-bedroom suites.

Conference Services - Conference Services provides event planning throughout the University, custom-tailoring programs according to specific requirements. Working with various departments on campus, Conference Services arranges housing, meals, meeting requirements, parking, recreation, audio-visual and much more, so participants can feel at home and welcome at  McMaster. McMaster University Student Centre

Nuclear reactor – The McMaster Nuclear Reactor (MNR) began operating in 1959 as the first university- based research reactor in the British Commonwealth. Today, users range from students, academics, and small businesses to international industry leaders. The MNR is a "pool-type" reactor, with a core of enriched uranium fuel moderated and cooled by a light water. The MNR provides a wide range of irradiation, laboratory and holding facilities, including a cyclotron, an accelerator, a small-angle neutron-scattering detector, and wide-angle neutron-scattering facilities.
