Summer ESL Program Features

• 30 hours a week of language instruction
(15 hours in class, 15 hours practical application per week)
• instruction includes grammar, reading, writing, vocabulary, and conversation.
• initial placement test (from placement test, classes are organized by age, English level and a balanced mix of students from different countries)

Summer ESL Program Objectives:

To improve oral and listening English skills

To increase fluency with English reading and writing skills

To introduce Canadian culture and history in a fun and informative way


Summer ESL Program Description:

Our Intensive English Summer Programs are designed for pre-university and university students abroad who would like to combine a high quality English language development program with an intercultural experience. Classroom activities integrate listening, reading, speaking and writing skills at an appropriate level from beginner to advanced.

In addition to in-class ESL instruction, students will enjoy activities in small groups led by McMaster University students. These activities will be both educational and fun, helping to apply and improve students' language abilities while introducing them to different aspects of Canadian life. Activities range from organized sports, to trips to the mall, movie theatres or restaurants, where students will have maximum opportunity to practice their English in real-life settings.

Students will also be able to experience Canada's beautiful outdoors, with trips to local provincial parks, and places of special scenic interest such as the Royal Botanical Gardens. Trips will be arranged to Niagara Falls, the CN Tower, the Royal Ontario Museum and other places of interest.

Program fees include: tuition, meal card, accommodation, excursions, airport pick-up and drop-off, access to recreational facilities, and university health insurance.

Payment Information: A non-refundable deposit of CAD$300.00 must accompany the application form. The deposit should be in the form of a certified Bank Cheque or Money Order payable to McMaster University. The balance must be paid one month before the beginning of the program.

Summer ETT Program Objectives:

This program is designed for those who are teaching English as a Foreign Language (EFL) in
their home country and who want to refine their own English skills while learning, reviewing
and applying teaching methodology.
Program participants will learn and apply:
• accurate and appropriate usage of oral and written discourse;
• speaking, listening and reading strategies;
• advanced grammar; and,
• advanced academic and practical vocabulary.

Participants will also:
• develop understanding of EFL pedagogical issues, classroom management concerns and techniques;
• be introduced to a wide range of textual, visual audio and on-line resources; and,
• upon completion of the program, have an understanding of their own individual areas of challenge in teaching
English, along with monitoring and correction techniques to deal with them.

Summer ETT Program Description:

Our intensive summer English Teachers Training (ETT) Program is designed to combine a high quality academic component with first-hand experience of living in Canada. Classes are conducted in small groups to ensure maximum attention to each program participant’s interests and requirements. Activities outside the classroom are conducted in such a way that participants have opportunities to apply their new English skills and knowledge.
The English as a Second Language for Teachers program focuses on improving teachers’ English language abilities in the context of English language, literature and culture. Additionally, teachers will be trained in teaching methodology to aid them in becoming more efficient and effective English teachers in their home-country educational institutions. The program is taught by highly qualified and experienced instructors with access to the superb facilities provided by a world-class university.

Program fees include: tuition, meal card, accommodation, excursions, airport pick-up and drop-off, access to recreational facilities, and university health insurance.

Summer ELTM Program Objectives:

Through texts, lectures, seminars, group work and discussions students will:
• become familiar with a wide variety of pedagogical tools and methods;
• gain intensive, hands-on experience of how literature is taught in North American universities;
• have the opportunity to practice various modes of teaching;
• be encouraged to use formalist/ theoretical/critical studies approaches in their teaching;
• improve proficiency of English writing substantially.

Summer ELTM Program Description:

This program is designed for university professors teaching English or English Literature. The program
gives participants a strong overall sense of how literature and cultural studies are taught at the
university level in Canada from the educators perspective. Participants are introduced to various historical, theoretical, generic and cultural studies models used in the study of literature in North American universities. Students will work in groups to discuss problem-based teaching, study literary texts, short stories, films, a play and poems. Additionally, participants will work closely with their peers on projects and have the opportunity to write and revise writing assignments.

Program fees include: tuition, meal card, accommodation, excursions, airport pick-up and drop-off, access to recreational facilities, and university health insurance.

FAQ

Does McMaster arrange my visa?
No, we do not. After full payment of the program fees, we will issue a Letter of Acceptance which can be used when applying for your visa at the Canadian Embassy in your area. Visit the website at http://www.cic.gc.ca/ for information on studying in Canada.

When is the application deadline? You should apply before May 31.

When do the program fees have to be paid in full and how can I arrange payment from outside Canada? The program fees must be paid in full at least one month before the beginning of the program. The payment should be by Certified Bank Cheque or Money Order.

Are there any Japanese/Korean/Chinese/Vietnamese restaurants in Hamilton? Yes, there are. Hamilton has many ethnic restaurants as well as markets/grocery stores. There are Chinese,Vietnamese, Korean and Japanese restaurants within a 15 minute walk to campus
