TITLE: Haiti: A Women's Health Initiative
PROJECT DATE: 2001-2008
PROJECT SUMMARY: This project has been designed
to strengthen the efforts of the Haitian Ministry of Health at the
central and departmental levels to include the development of human
resources, the development of appropriate health information systems
and the enhancement of existing community health units based on
principles of decentralization and community participation. This
project will also strengthen the existing primary health care model
aimed at delivering a minimum package of health services to the
population including comprehensive health care for women with an
emphasis on safe pregnancies with a reduction of maternal mortality.
It will also strengthen health promotion activities encouraging
the population to assume responsibility for its health which includes

TITLE: Primary Health Care
for Kwazulu-Natal Women
PROJECT DATE: 1998-2003
PROJECT SUMMARY: The project is aimed at women
who have been disadvantaged because of their race, gender, culture
and rurality; a primary aim is their empowerment to participate
in social and community development. A key element is to increase
the ability of women in rural areas to ensure infrastructure development
in their areas. Women will learn how to evaluate a PHC system and
how they can influence the quality of care which they receive. The
project will also provide information about the economic system
and the skills which these women will require to become self-sufficient
through income generation. The knowledge which they gain regarding
the existence of, and how to access systems will benefit the entire
community through the acquisition of clean, running water and safe
environment once they have learned that these resources are available
and know how to make use of the appropriate governmental and non-governmental
system(s).
TITLE: Research and Training in Coastal Ecodevelopment
PROJECT DATE: June 1995 - June 2000
PROJECT SUMMARY: The Universitas Diponegoro is
located in the city of Semarang on the north coast of Java. This
area is undergoing rapid industrialization which is undermining
the economic self-reliance of small coastal communities and destroying
fragile fresh water and marine ecosystems. In response to this situation,
the Universitas Diponegoro is developing a centre of excellence
in marine sciences with a particular focus on environmental deterioration
and its impact on human health. To support this development, doctoral
students will be trained at universities in Southeast Asia in fields
such as environmental sciences, health sciences and epidemiology.
McMaster will participate by providing faculty to supervise the
doctoral students while they undertake their research. McMaster
faculty will also participate in local research projects aimed at
developing sustainable economic activities for coastal communities
suffering from the effects of pollution and declining fish stocks.
TITLE: Development of Women Health Professionals
(DWHP) Program: Nurses and Lady Health Visitors
PROJECT DATE: September 1994-2004
PROJECT SUMMARY: The Program builds on a 14 year
collaboration between McMaster and The Aga Khan University (AKU)
which assisted with the development of The AKU School
of Nursing (AKUSON) and nursing services at The Aga Khan University
Hospital (AKUH) as major resources for the development of nursing
in Pakistan. AKUSON and McMaster School of Nursing, in partnership,
are now working collaboratively with the governments to improve
nursing as a means of improving health services and the health status
of the population of Pakistan.
The multi-faceted program is designed to improve the capacity of
nursing professionals in leadership positions to participate effectively
in health policy and planning dialogues at all levels, to raise
the profile of nursing through strengthening specific nursing institutions,
and to provide advanced education for specific groups of nurses
and lady health visitors.

of community water use patterns, production of an action plan(s)
for optimizing water use in the region, and outreach programs with
appropriate education materials. McMaster has assisted in developing
community-based, culturally appropriate and cost-effective strategies,
and enlarging the indigenous capacity for management of water resources
in Yobe State. Outcomes included: inventory of regional water resources,
inventory of a sample community's water use pattern, Action Plan
for optimizing water use in the sample community developed through

TITLE: Health of Children in War Zones
PROJECT DATE: 1992-1997
PROJECT SUMMARY: Health Reach has partner organizations
that it collaborates with in carrying out the "Health of Children
in War Zones Project". Health Reach is a joint program of the Centre
for International Health and the Centre for Peace Studies of McMaster
University. The primary aim of Health Reach is to improve the health
and well-being of people in zones of armed conflict through the
integration of data collection activities, health-related interventions
and peace initiatives. Health Reach disseminates research findings
through academic and university-based groups and publications, the
media, non-governmental organizations and community groups, locally,
nationally and internationally.
The successor to the Health Reach program is The War & Health
Program (WHP) which is also a joint program co-sponsored by The
Centre for International Health (CIH) and the Centre for Peace Studies
(CPS) at McMaster University. It is a multidisciplinary, project-centered
program committed to contributing to the well-being of populations
in zones of armed conflict, through research, education and training.
The WHP is explicitly dedicated to health peace and justice, and
is interested in developing innovative approaches to research and
education; there is a specific interest in facilitating the involvement
of universities in pursuing these social goals, particularly institutions
in countries at risk of conflict, actually in conflict, or in a
post-conflict stage. The WHP seeks to strengthen the international
community of institutions addressing the special needs of war-torn
societies, and helping institutions of higher learning to contribute
to the building of health and peace in their communities. The program
operates according to a model of higher education that is explicitly
humane and socially engaged. Within the value framework of international
humanitarian covenants, it encourages learning that is needs-based,
problem-based and community-based. Since it values shared learning
and the development of strategies and institutions that go beyond
national loyalties and interests, it seeks transnational partnerships
for research and learning.

TITLE: Global:
INCLEN
PROJECT DATE: 1980 - 1997
PROJECT SUMMARY: In 1980 the Rockefeller Foundation
established a program to promote the development of Clinical Epidemiology
Units (CEU) in designated medical schools in the developing world.
The goal was to strengthen the research capacity of third world
medical faculties and to facilitate rational clinical and health
care decision-making. The program was envisaged in two phases. Phase
1, the identification of sites for CEU development and the provision
of advanced research training to CEU faculty has been the focus
since 1980. Phase 2, the transition of CEU to national and regional
health research training centres began in 1991.
The Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at McMaster
was the first of five developed country leaders in clinical epidemiology
and biostatistics to be designated a Phase 1 Clinical Epidemiology
Research Training Centre (CERTC) by the Rockefeller Foundation.
We have been responsible, since 1980, for program development and
the provision of advanced research training and ongoing support
to CEU faculty.
