The Ontario Public Interest Research Group (OPIRG) McMaster aims to link research with action on a broad range of social justice and environmental issues, both locally and globally. Through research, proactive education, community networking and action, OPIRG empowers individuals to become active participants in the decisions which affect their lives. And it is their energy and imagination that is the driving force behind the work of OPIRG.
Student and community volunteers can become involved in working groups, OPIRG's board of directors, research for credit projects or the day to day administrative work at the OPIRG office and in our resource library.
Past Working Groups have included Waste Reduction, Recycle Cycles, Human Rights, Latin America Forum, Fair Trade, Naturalization, Students Against Sweatshops, End the Sanctions Against Iraq, Anti-Poverty, Red Hill Valley, RadiOPIRG (on CFMU 93.3 fm), and many others. We welcome new ideas for working groups.
Take part in our free workshops on topics such as anti-racism, consensus decision making, silk-screening, and bike repair.
We strongly encourage students and other members to take advantage of OPIRG's alternative lending library and to suggest resource acquisitions including books, videos and periodicals. Students use our library for a variety of their course requirements. From Adbusters to Z Magazine, Anti-Racism to Urban Development, we have the most timely and relevant materials on campus.
OPIRG's core funding comes from full-time undergraduate students in the form of a $6.09 refundable levy. If you do not wish to support the work of OPIRG McMaster you can claim a full refund by bringing in your student card to the OPIRG office. This must be done within three weeks after the completion of the drop and add period when your student status has been finalized. If you are not a full-time undergraduate student at McMaster, a mere $10 will get you a Community Membership, entitling you to all the wonderful things OPIRG has to offer. |
