MIEH is committed to research excellence expressed by the following mandate:

  • Mobilize expertise towards investigative and solution oriented research which is focused on the complex interactions between the natural and social environment and human health concerns.
  • Promote interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral approaches to needs assessment and in the design and implementation of research programs.
  • Commitment to share and effectively communicate research results to appropriate audiences.
  • Facilitate education in environmental and health issues in partnership with geographic and academic communities (from undergraduate to post professional), both locally and internationally.
  • Assist policy makers, academics, community stakeholders and the general public by offering consulting, research, and project expertise on a variety of environmental health issues.


  • Production and publishing of research in environmental health
  • Disseminate research results to relevant decision-makers
  • Facilitate the development of research proposals and research-transfer mechanisms for partners, associates and researchers


  • Train and educate in environmental health within and outside the university

MIEH shares expertise by responding to requests from sponsors, partners, groups and individuals outside the university for advice and consultation on environmental health issues

Service Examples

  • Provide service to the academic community through scientific interactions, to policy-makers through their research and consultations, and to the sponsors through a range of activities
  • Act as environmental health associates to the City of Hamilton and contributes to local public health policy and strategy through participation in Public Health Research and Education Development (PHRED)
  • Work cooperatively with local Boards of Education, Hamilton Industrial Environmental Association, McMaster's Public Health & Preventive Medicine Residency Program and local citizen groups
  • Work with provincial, federal and international agencies on research and policy issues in environment and human health, including International Joint Commission, Ontario Federation of Labour, Ontario Ministry of Environment, Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, Health Canada and Environment Canada


Membership is open to those who are actively engaged in environment and health issues in a research, teaching or service capacity.

The benefits of becoming involved with the Institute include:

  • leading and conducting research on Institute sponsored projects
  • collaborating on the development of proposals for Institute grants
  • reviewing Institute sponsored proposals
  • organizing and participating in Institute sponsored conferences, workshops, seminars and briefing fora

 

We provide an easy entrée for those wishing to utilize McMaster's skills in environment and health. Support costs for organizing, planning and facilitating (time, energy and supplies) are borne by the Institute, reducing "costs" to individual faculty for securing interdisciplinary research grants.
