Frequently Asked Questions
Plan basics, benefit booklet and forms
MAPS has arranged for part-time students to opt-in to the MSU's Health and Dental Plan. This is the same plan that all full-time undergraduates pay for as part of their ancillary fees.

Who can purchase this insurance
You can purchase this insurance if you are:
- Registered as a part-time undergraduate in the Winter 2015 Term
- Enrolled at the Centre for Continuing Education in the Winter 2015 Term
- Enrolled in the Clinical Behavioural Sciences Program (Bachelor's stream only. Graduate Stream students should contact the GSA).
How much is the insurance and what is the deadline for applying
MSU Members approved changes to benefits in a referendum held in January 2015. As a result, the premium cost per person insurance has increased to $385 for 12 months of coverage. The opt-in period for the Fall term is now open until 30 September, 20215. Generally, there is a second opt-in period in January.
Why do MAPS members pay more for this insurance than MSU members
The higher cost for part-time students is due to a higher anticipated utilization by part-time students who purchase coverage (if you are paying specifically for the plan, there is is an expectation that you will use it). As all full-time students pay for the plan, but not all use it, their costs are shared over a wider group.
Where do I apply/pay for this insurance
If you have a credit card you can apply online between September 1st and 30th, 2015.
You can also come into the MAPS Office at MUSC 234 to complete the form on one of our computers, or complete a paper form.
What if I don't have a credit card or can't complete the application online
If you do not have a Visa or MasterCard, you'll need to come into our offices and complete a form. We can accept payment in cash, certified cheque or money order during our normal business hours. If you want to pay by Interac, we can accept this only Monday through Thursday between 9 and 5pm.
Is coverage immediate
Coverage is effective as of September 1st, but automatic billing is not available until the insurance company has verified that you are a student at McMaster, and this may not be complete until mid-October. If you need to incur expenses now, you should keep your receipts and and submit a claim for reimbursement.

The online membership transfer system developed by MAPS, the MSU, and representatives from Student Accounts and Cashiers, Student Accessibility Services, and the Registrar's office resulted in significant improvements in processing time for membership transfers. Stakeholders will be reviewing the results over the next few months to see if further improvements can be made.
