Letter of Welcome from the Academic Director

As the Academic Director of the Indigenous Studies Program, I would like to welcome you to McMaster University and to the Indigenous Studies Program. The Program began in 1992 when students like you who found the University to be an alienating environment, sought to improve their educational experience. Thanks to those young visionaries we now have an Indigenous Studies Program designed to complement your chosen field of study. We offer the option to complete a minor in Indigenous Studies or a combined degree in Indigenous Studies and another discipline.

We are proud that our students and elders have input into all aspects of the Program. The McMaster First Nations Students Association is also available to provide a network to support and encourage your success. They also often plan and organize events, social activities and conferences. We find that the unique relationship Indigenous Studies maintains with both students and community enhances the overall experiences of the students. In addition, our program is one of the few that has all Aboriginal instructors and often utilizes talented, knowledgeable community members as instructors and guest lecturers. With both Western academically trained instructors and traditional knowledge carriers working with the Indigenous Studies Program, students benefit from distinctly Indigenous methods of teaching and learning.

Our goal is to support First Nations, Métis and Inuit students in any way to ensure you succeed in accomplishing your goals and achievements. We provide a number of services including an Indigenous Student Counsellor, a student lounge, computer lab and resource library. We hope to graduate knowledgeable, articulate and secure individuals who will reciprocate their experience through sharing their skills and talents with our people and communities. We are happy that you are interested in our Program. Please take the time to review our site and learn more about the Indigenous Studies Program and the services available to assist you on campus as well as in the region. It is my personal hope that you will participate in helping us continue to grow stronger and better for the next generation.

Onen,

Dawn Martin-Hill
