The Value of Stimulable Phosphor Technology in the Investigation of Musculo-skeletal Disease in Children.

Abstract

The value of stimulable phosphor technology in a variety of adult examinations is well accepted, and this may be associated with reduction of radiation dosage and reduction in radiographic exposure errors. In addition, the spatial resolution is sufficient for some adult applications and the contrast and spatial frequency processing may aid conspicuity of lesions as well as delineate extent. These advantages are less well defined in pediatrics. We studied the diagnostic accuracy of stimulable phosphor technology with a 400 speed conventional film-screen combination in the investigation and follow up of a variety of musculo-skeletal disease in children, with a parallel study on dose reduction using a double cassette method. There was an approximate dose reduction of 40% and a decrease in repeat examinations as well as improved visualisation of structures and disease processes.
