Abstract

Eleven 9- to 12-year-old healthy boys performed three 120-min intermittent exercise sessions (four 20-min cycling bouts at 50% VO2max with 10-min rest in between) at 35±1°C and 50±5% RH. Drinking of three grape-flavored beverages: water (FW), 18mmol/l NaCl (NaCl) and 6% carbohydrate (CHO) solution (chilled to 8-10°C) was ad libitum. Body weight (BW), drink intake (DI), urine output, sweating rate, heart rate, body temperatures, thirst, and stomach fullness perception were measured periodically. Ratings of drink palatability (overall taste, sweetness, saltiness, sourness) were insignificant among the beverages. Totals for the session BW changes were +0.36 %BW, 0.00 %BW, +0.61 %BW; and for DI were 899g, 794g, 950g in FW, NaCl, and CHO, respectively. All body fluid balance components, physiological and perceptual variables were insignificantly different among sessions. There was a tendency for fluid intake to be greater with CHO than with NaCl or FW, but dehydration was prevented with all of the drinks. At this stage, the mechanisms that underlie voluntary DI in these experimental conditions remain unknown. Supported by Gatorade Sports Science Institute
