The VGH-YM DigiNote Database System has been newly established at the Veterans General Hospital-Taipei in collaboration with the National Yang-Ming University, in order to provide another learning platform and facilitate the storage and retrieval of relevant teaching materials. The initial phase focusses on clinical disciplines and started with digitizing lecture notes, which had been bilingually transcribed almost as a routine in Taiwanese medical curricula. The database system lays emphasis on its tree structure and index function particularly, so that every student can get the concept of each topic and search the contents easily. On the other side, making a large amount of web pages with consistent format, user-friendly interface and powerful functions is a challenge to medical students in Taiwan, who have need of publishing lecture notes. A strategy of dividing the job into scribing, editing and compiling is adopted to improve cooperation of students with different background of computer knowledge. The teamwork combining programming with careful organization ensures a successful project. Along with the extensive use of Internet, the DigiNote database may remain updated and reach broader audience.
