DA cell activity: cat vs monkey, SNc vs VTA

The behaving-monkey literature seems to suggest that DA cells do not respond to arbitrary sensory stimuli.  In the monkey, the majority of the cells have been recorded from SNc, but those in VTA are said to be similar.  Are we dealing with a major species difference here?
