Abstract

The importance of Internet as a communication medium is clear, due to the amount of information it distributes, and the high number of potential recipients it has. The appearance of virtual user communities (VUC) focuses on information classification within subjects of interest for certain groups of people, to facilitate its search and use and to promote the communication between them.

UniNet is a network based on university and other compatible servers, which include all telematic resources. Among them are internet relay chat channels (IRC) on thematic characteristics and scientific content. It is designed with direct and universal communication by text-conference between virtual communities of Internet users. It nevertheless has a series of unique characteristics that differentiates it from other conventional IRC networks (EFnet, Undernet, Dalnet, etc.)

UniNet is based on an altruistic idea, born in the academic scope, supported by different university institutions and made by many people's volunteer work. UniNet is open permanently to all communities interested in scientific, cultural and humanistic activities, or which are based on educational, student views, medical/technical assistance, research, etc., without language, racial, ethnic, ideology, cultural or any other type of discrimination.
