The “Heart” Workshop Series
Human rights, Equity, Accessibility, Respect Toolkit (HEART)
An Introduction to Human Rights at McMaster
Wednesday February 15th, 2012, 10:30 am – 12:30 pm, MUSC 203
An introductory workshop where we’ll:
- learn more about our human-rights-related rights and responsibilities,
- define key terms such as harassment, bullying and discrimination; and,
- develop skills to prevent and intervene when challenged by harassment and bullying.
Positive Space Provider Program
Thursday March 1st, 2012, 1:30 pm – 4:00 pm, MUSC 203
This 2.5 hour workshop aims to increase awareness about the lives and experiences of LGBTQ-identified persons and provide participants with the opportunity to act as allies. Together, we will:
- Learn more about the terms the community uses to define itself
- Develop greater awareness of the issues that continue to marginalize and exclude LGBTQ persons
- Identify strategies for making McMaster University an LGBTQ welcoming, inclusive and positive space.
Upon completion of the Program, you’ll receive a poster, sticker or button that can be displayed in your work, study or living space to signify your support for LGBTQ persons.
Accessibility 101
Wednesday March 7th, 2012, 10:30 am – 12:30 pm, MUSC 203
Together, we will:
- Enhance our understanding of what accessibility means in the McMaster context
- Define key terms such as accessibility, inclusion and intersectionality
- Develop skills for advancing accessibility on campus
- Identify ways to get involved with accessibility on campus
An Introduction to the “Duty to Accommodate”
Tuesday March 20th, 2012, 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm, MUSC 203
Ever wonder what the duty to accommodate is and who is entitled to be accommodated? If so, this workshop is for you. This introductory workshop will:
- Clarify rights and responsibilities in relation to the “duty to accommodate”
- Define key terms such as “reasonable” and “undue hardship”
- Discuss how and when the “duty to accommodate” comes up in the classroom and workplace settings
What’s In A Word: Insult or Inclusion?
Thursday March 29th, 2012, 10:30 am – 12:30 pm, MUSC 203
How do we describe a colleague, classmate or roommate who is different from us? When is it even relevant to do so? This workshop is intended to:
- Increase our awareness of the “evolving language of diversity”; and,
- Enhance our ability to build inclusion through the everyday use of word and phrases that focus on diversity.
Facilitators: Raihanna Hirji-Khalfan and Vilma Rossi from the Office of Human Rights & Equity Services. Attend one workshop or attend them all. Participants who complete 3 or more workshops will receive a certificate. All workshops are free of charge, however, pre-registration is required.
