Nuclear Energy Worker Status

Important information for Project Supervisors and Radioisotope Users

A new category of worker was introduced with the new Canadian Nuclear Safety and Control Act and the Radiation Protection Regulations - the Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW). The regulations define an NEW as follows: "a person who is required, in the course of the person's business or occupation in connection with a nuclear substance or nuclear facility, to perform duties in such circumstances that there is a reasonable probability that the person may receive a dose of radiation that is greater than the prescribed limit for the general public."

The Health Physics Advisory Committee (HPAC) has (NEW has determined that all authorized users of radioactive material at the University, and all persons with unescorted access to Nuclear Facilities or High Level laboratories, must be declared NEWs

Health Physics has been implementing this policy for several months - all new workers have been appropriately designated and we are working our way through the existing authorized users. In addition, we are gradually updating Permits issued to project supervisors to reflect this new condition of approval.

If you have questions about NEW status, please check out our Q&A document here. If you still have questions or concerns, please contact a member of the Health Physics staff or call our office at 24226.

IF YOU ARE AN AUTHORIZED USER AND HAVE NOT BEEN DESIGNATED AS A NEW, PLEASE CALL OUR OFFICE IMMEDIATELY.
