About Windows Update

Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that helps you to keep your computer up-to-date. Use Windows Update to choose updates for your computer’s operating system, software, and hardware. New content is added to the site regularly, so you can always get the most recent updates and fixes to protect your computer and keep it running smoothly.

The Microsoft Update web site is a convenient and easy to use website that automatically installs needed software fixes and can also upgrade software components if you desire.

There are several options one can use to open the website. If you encounter difficulties see Microsoft Windows Update Troubleshooter.

Option 1.

Windows XP users can configure Windows Update through System Properties.

Click on the Start button.
Select My Computer.
Click on View System Information.
In the System Properties window select Automatic Updates.
Check Keep my computer up to date box and chose a download setting.

Please ensure that you are logged onto your computer with a user account that has administrative access rights. 

 

Option 2.
In addition, one can go to the website URL: http://update.microsoft.com/ and the user will be directed to the proper page by the website. 

1.                          When you enter Windows Update, click Scan for updates.

2.  As you browse through the available updates in each category, click Add to select the update of your choice and add it to the collection of updates you want to install. You can also read a full description of each item by clicking the Read more link.

3.  When you have selected all the updates you want, click Review and install updates, and then click Install Now.

Note Some updates may require that you restart your computer. Save your work and close any open programs before beginning the installation process.

 

Option 3.
Use the Tools menu of Internet Explorer and select Windows Update (Figure 1).

 

 

Option 4.
Use the Start Menu and select Windows Update from the list of programs (Figure 2).
