Configuring a Windows 2000 Pro /XP Pro connection to Office Server Shares
On campus
Department or group script from G: to map network drives to Office Shares
*On campus use only*
Note:
- You must have a MAC ID.
- You must have permission to access the Office Server shares before attempting to connect.
- This method is used once on a computer to setup network drives. The computer must be a member of the AP1 domain before the scripts are run. A computer that has AP1 listed as an option on the computer logon screen is a member of the AP1 domain. Alternatively these drives can be mapped on the computer without using the script.
- Disabling the 'WebClient' service in Windows XP improves performance while accessing Microsoft Network shares. This appears to help both with access to the office servers from on campus, as well as improving performance through the VPN. Disabling the service isn't known to produce any undesirable side effects, at least so far. The 'WebClient' is used to serve web pages from the computer.
Using a department or group script to map shares:
You must have permission to access the network shares before you begin. You will need to set up a temporary link to the server. Right click on My Network Places or My Computer icon on the desktop and select Map Network Drive. Select the letter G and enter \\OSX\APPLSOFT$ (X=appropriate office server number) as the network path. DO NOT check the Reconnect at Logon prompt. Click on Finish .
From the G: drive, double click on CornerNT / Mclink / cornerntw2k.EXE. Click on Yes and Next >> at the Title screen to begin installing.
Click on the appropriate Administrative or Faculty button.

From the drop down menu, select the appropriate Departmental script. Click Next >> to continue.

You will then be prompted to click Finish to complete the install. In accordance to your selections, a registry entry will be made identifying the department and server to be accessed. Click Yes, if prompted and then click on OK.

From the G: drive, double click on CornerNT / Mclink / imagever.reg. Click OK to finish.
You are now ready to reboot the computer. Click on Start, Shutdown, Restart, Yes.
When the computer finishes rebooting and you have entered your MAC ID username and password, you will be linked to all necessary server drives.
Open My Computer and verify that all drives have connected ( G, H, I, P and Q)
G: \\OSX\APPLSOFT$ (General desktop Application Software)
H: \\OSX\MAC ID$ (Personal space on the server)
I: \\OSX\APPLINFO$ (Shared drive for all users on server )
P: \\OSX\DepartmentAPPL$ (Specific departmental applications)
Q: \\OSX\DepartmentCOMMON$ (Common departmental data / files)
Not using a depart or group script to map shares:
- Right-click on "My Network Places" or "My Computer" icon. Select the 'Map Network Drive' option.
- Select the local drive letter you wish to associate with the Office Server share.
- Enter the (fully-qualified) share name into the Folder window, for example: \\osX.cis.mcmaster.ca\deptcommon$ . Where osX is the server you want to connect to.
- Click on the Connect using a different user name link further down.
- Check reconnect at logon.
- In the new window, enter your user name prefixed by AP1, for example: AP1\MACID
- Enter your MAC ID account password, and click OK - the new window closes.
- Click the Finish button to establish the drive link.
