Deferred Exams/Missed Coursework
Students taking self-directed distance education courses should follow the policies for missed coursework and missed tests or examinations outlined in the course package sent prior to the start of the course. Contact the Program Manager with any questions.
All other students who need to arrange for coursework accommodation, as a result of medical, personal or family reasons, must contact the course instructor within 48 hours of the originally scheduled due date. Students who need to arrange for deferred tests or examinations must contact the Program Manager or Program Associate to discuss accommodations and procedures related to deferred tests and/or examinations within 48 hours of the originally scheduled test/exam. Failure to follow the foregoing procedures will result in a grade of zero (0) on the coursework or exam and no further consideration will be granted.
CCE is sensitive to students who have missed coursework or exams for legitimate medical and/or extenuating personal circumstances. It is equally important to preserve fairness and to prevent abuse by students who may consider such a privilege as an opportunity to gain unfair advantage over their peers. Therefore, while submission of proper support documentation is required for special consideration of missed coursework or granting of deferred exams, it does not guarantee that the privilege will be granted.
The policy governing the granting of special consideration for missed academic work and of deferred exams is University-wide and is stated in the Undergraduate Calendar. The implementation of the policy differs among Faculties, Schools and other Departments.
In accordance to McMaster University’s General Academic Regulations, “it is imperative that students make every effort to meet the originally scheduled course requirements and it is a student’s responsibility to write examinations as scheduled.” Therefore, all students are expected to attend and complete the specific course requirements (i.e., attendance, assignments, and tests/exams) listed in the course outline on or by the date specified.
