550-802 Policing in a Multicultural Society (3 units) Register for this class.
This course is not intended to correct undesirable, wrong, or inadequate attitudes and practices that might be defined as racist. Instead, its objective is to illustrate and emphasize that what is labeled as racism cannot be adequately defined by purely objective criteria. The course material will demonstrate that considerations of ethnic relations, tensions and conflicts must be defined and appreciated from a particular vantage point. The subject matter will be largely situated within the context of work-related demands and expectations.

This course is organized into four sections: Business & Economic Systems, Management Functions, Business Functions, and Business and the Environment. Through lectures and interactive case discussions, this course helps students to gain an understanding of the basic concepts associated with human resources management, marketing, production, financial management and general business administration in the Canadian context. Emphasis will be placed on the importance of timely planning and on the concept of an organization as an open system continually interacting with its environment and the need for congruency between the various components.

This comprehensive course is designed to help students understand the principles of interpersonal communication as a key element of effective management. Communication principles are applied to management issues including corporate culture, organizational communication, leadership and motivation, problem-solving, decision making, cultural diversity and communicating change. Students will learn interpersonal, written and oral communication skills that are necessary to improve overall communication with others (peers, superiors, subordinates and clients) within an organizational setting.

This course provides an overview of the nature and extent of gambling in Canada and the role of government, and the private and not-for profit sectors in gambling activities. You will learn theoretical approaches to explain the development and perpetuation of problem gambling in individuals, to identify the characteristics of problem gamblers, and to identify the social and financial costs of gambling to the family, the workplace and society as well as government and community responses to these effects.

620-468 Basic Principles in Conflict Resolution (3 units) DISCONTINUED
The aim of this course is to present guidelines and concepts in conflict resolution. An introduction to how the legal system handles conflict in Canada, in addition to an overview of the nature of conflict and alternative forums for handling conflict will be presented. An objective of the course is to develop amongst participants an understanding of the concepts behind mediation techniques, as well as an understanding of elements and issues in effective mediation, such as, instilling motivation and ownership, and regulating the interaction between disputants. Within such a framework, the course will enable participants to understand some of the social service aspect of police work; gain insight into the ways in which various police officers respond to conflict situations and thus identify and define alternative police responses; and evaluate the most effective way of serving the needs of the community.
