
Metallurgy of Iron and Steel FAQ's
What is this program all about and what type of person should take it?
Developed in collaboration with the Materials Science and Engineering Department of McMaster University, this program is designed to give its graduates a comprehensive background in steel manufacturing from extraction and refining to the manufacturing of ferrous products.
Anyone working in any aspect of steel production or sales would find the knowledge gained from this program of value and assistance to their career.
How do I get my Metallurgy of Iron & Steel Certificate?
Students who complete all six courses, in order, are eligible to receive the certificate. The certificate takes three years to complete.
I’ve noticed all courses are on the same evenings – why is this?
The Metallurgy certificate is designed for students to take one course at a time, in order. We offer all of the courses on the same evening to try to stem any students from taking courses out of order. It is important to the learning experience of this program that the courses are taken one at a time, in order.
How are students evaluated?
Every course is unique –typically a final grade is achieved through a combination of assignments, presentations, exams and participation.
Where are the courses held?
Five of the six metallurgy courses are held in classrooms in our Downtown Centre. One course – 600-849 Metals Refining & Steelmaking - is held at the main campus.
What about course materials?
The metallurgy courses require students to purchase either a custom courseware package or a textbook or a combination of both. The materials are available at the beginning of each semester at Subtitles, our downtown temporary bookstore.
