Students will explore the essentials of case management by examining the fundamental concepts, components, principles and models of case management in various settings, with an emphasis on current issues, trends and approaches. This is an introductory core course, which is a prerequisite for the remaining courses in the case management program.

560-508L Diversity in Service Provision (3 units) Register for this class.
This course is designed to familiarize the learner with the challenges and opportunities in providing client centered care to diverse populations. Focus is on examining the learner's attitudes, self-reflection and skill building. Skills to be developed include anti-oppression practice, communication, conflict resolution and empowerment. This course will provide the learner with a unified framework to understand and critically analyze the complexity of diversity, oppression and the parallels and intersections among them. The learner will explore a variety of diversity constructs including; race, class, gender, sexual orientation, disability and ageing.

560-511L Case Management Process: Interaction with the Client and Support Systems (3 units) Register for this class.
The course explores the development and enhancement of case management skills, interagency relationships, and formal/informal support systems. The course will then progress to the micro level, focusing on the knowledge and interpersonal skills required by case managers to interact effectively with their clients. This section will examine the helping relationship within a client-driven partnering approach to care, communication/interviewing skills, communicating with clients with special needs/impairments, and finally, written communication in case management.

This course is designed to examine the practice of quality case management using evidence based research and education to influence policy and program development. Concept of quality in case management will be explored through examining relevant literature and linking it to current practice.

560-513L Ethical, Legal and Financial issues in Case Management (3 units) Register for this class.
This course will explore the ethical, legal and financial issues pertaining to case management. There are two main parts to this course. The first part focuses on the ethical and legal issues case manager encounter in their practice. In order to address the many complexities case managers face it is important for them to have an introductory understanding of the ethical theories and concepts, and the legal frameworks that guide professional practice. The second part will focus on the financial and resource management issues that are fundamental to a case managers role. The format for this course is self-study, with questions and readings to guide the student. The opportunity for group discussion will facilitate a shared understanding of the issues theories and concepts. There will be three approaches to evaluation including student presentations.
