Bridging the gap between theory and practice.
For over twenty years McMaster has offered a comprehensive education to social service and health science professionals, and to those aspiring to begin a career in these fields. This is Canada's leading program on addiction and substance abuse treatment.
Program objectives
The Addiction Education programs were developed in partnership with the Faculty of Social Sciences to provide theoretical knowledge and practical skills for working with people with addictions of various types. Courses are designed to help you:
understand addictions and approaches to intervention, including assessment, treatment, relapse prevention, case management and self-help
develop or enhance individual and group counselling techniques
explore specific needs of individuals and groups including, women, youth, the elderly, adult children of alcoholics, people with concurrent disorders or other disabilities, and people with gambling problems
This program requires a formal application.

Program delivery format
flexible course load - take as many or as few as you wish at once
distance and classroom delivery in Hamilton, Ontario (near Toronto)
monthly start dates for distance courses
applications accepted throughout the year
on-site contract training
McMaster has replaced ELM with a new online course management system called Avenue to Learn. If any portion of your course will be delivered or available online through Avenue to Learn, your instructor will notify you.
