McMaster University

New Faculty

Congratulations on your new appointment with McMaster University! As a new faculty member it is important to get your laboratory up and running as quickly as possible. Acquiring staff and grant applications are typically the first courses of action a new investigator will take. To avoid delays in administrative processes, please be advised of the following:

  • release of funds is dependant upon animal / human ethics or biohazard utilization protocols in place BEFOREHAND should you require them
  • please read the policies and guidelines associated with your FUNDING SOURCE (more info here)
  • these approvals depend on prior completion of specific training programmes for you and your staff (WHMIS, Fire Safety, TDG, biosafety, animal training etc)
  • get your training, get your approvals, get your funding!
  • contact FHS or EOHSS safety offices (links on left) for training options
  • the exception is all Biosafety Training is through the Biosafety Office
  • be aware that Principal Investigators have additional biosafety training compared to workers

If you have any questions about the information here send an e-mail to the Biosafety Office.

Human Pathogens and Toxins Act

An Act to promote safety and security with respect to human pathogens and toxins.

By legislation, McMaster has obtained a single license for work with pathogens and toxins.

This single license depends on compliance from ALL researchers.

Funding requirements typically depend on adherance to the guidelines outlined in the 'Laboratory Biosafety Guidelines' (PHAC) and the 'Containment Standards for Veterinary Facilities' (CFIA).
