In 1986, the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE) and 3M Canada joined to reward exceptional contributions to teaching and learning at Canadian universities. The community of 3M National Teaching Fellows embodies the highest ideals of teaching excellence and scholarship with a commitment to enhance the educational experience of every learner.
There are now 258 3M National Teaching Fellows scattered throughout Canada representing a broad range of academic disciplines. They work individually and collaboratively to enhance teaching and learning at their own institutions and through larger collaborative initiatives supported by the Society.
The Award
- Up to 10 Fellowships are presented annually.
- The Fellowship includes lifetime membership in STLHE.
- Recipients are formally announced in a special university undergraduate student issue of Maclean’s Magazine.
- Recipients will attend an expense paid, 4-day scholarly retreat at the Fairmont Le Château Montebello to celebrate exceptional achievements in teaching and to provide an opportunity for outstanding teachers to share experiences and ideas.
The Call for Nominations is distributed by email to the Office of the Vice-President (Academic) at all Canadian universities, Educational Development Centres, and to STLHE members.
Nominations are submitted by teachers on their own behalf, or by their colleagues. Candidates need not be members of STLHE.
General Information
- STLHE welcomes nominations from colleagues and/or students.
- STLHE welcomes nominations in French or English.
- Self-nominations are discouraged.
Eligibility
The Fellowship is open to all individuals currently teaching at a Canadian university, regardless of discipline, level, or term of appointment.
Criteria
The Selection Committee looks for the following independent evidence:
- Excellence in teaching over a number of years, principally (but not exclusively) at the undergraduate level.
- Commitment to the improvement of university teaching, with emphasis on contributions beyond the nominee's discipline or profession to as broad an audience as possible.
